1. Information we collect
Depending on how you use Chronicle 19, we may process:
- information you provide when contacting us, such as your name, email address and the contents of your message;
- information provided when submitting comments, including your name, email address and comment;
- contributor account and profile information;
- information provided when subscribing to our newsletter, including your email address;
- technical information collected when you use the website, such as your IP address, browser and device information, and information about how the website is used;
- information processed through analytics, advertising, security services, affiliate links and embedded third-party content.
We aim to collect only information that is reasonably necessary for the relevant purpose.
2. How and why we use personal data
Website operation and security
We process technical information to operate, maintain and secure the website, prevent abuse and spam, and protect the website and its users.
The legal basis is our legitimate interest in operating a secure and functional website and, where applicable, complying with legal obligations.
Contacting Chronicle 19
Our contact form asks for your name, email address, subject and message.
The information you submit is forwarded to the Chronicle 19 email address designated to receive website enquiries. We do not retain contact-form submissions in a separate database.
Once forwarded, the message may remain in the relevant email account as ordinary correspondence for as long as reasonably necessary.
The legal basis is our legitimate interest in receiving and responding to communications sent to us.
Comments
Visitors may submit comments using their name, email address and comment. The email address is not publicly displayed.
Comments are subject to moderation, automated content review and spam-prevention measures before publication. We may use third-party security, anti-spam and content-review services to prevent automated or abusive submissions and enforce our community standards.
When a comment is submitted for automated content review, only the text of the comment is provided for review. We do not include the commenter’s name, email address, IP address, account information or other website metadata.
Automated review may allow a comment, prevent its submission, or refer it for human moderation.
Published comments are generally retained for as long as the associated article remains published. Requests to remove comments are considered on a case-by-case basis, taking into account applicable data-protection rights, moderation requirements and the integrity of the published discussion.
The legal basis for processing comment data is our legitimate interest in providing and moderating a public commenting facility, while protecting the website and its community from spam, abuse and unlawful content.
Contributors
Contributor accounts are created manually by Chronicle 19. Public registration is not available.
The information necessary to establish and maintain a contributor account is:
- name or display name;
- email address.
Contributor email addresses are used for account administration, password management and editorial communication relating to their contributions.
Contributors may optionally provide:
- photograph;
- biography;
- pronouns;
- links to social-media profiles.
Optional profile information is used to create the contributor’s public author profile and is provided voluntarily.
Public contributor information may remain associated with published work after a contributor stops contributing.
Contributor-uploaded images are processed for publication. Original uploaded image files are removed after processing, and the retained WebP images do not contain EXIF metadata.
The legal basis for necessary contributor account processing is providing the requested contributor functionality. Optional public profile information is processed on the basis of the contributor’s voluntary choice to provide and publish it.
Newsletter
Visitors may subscribe to the Chronicle 19 newsletter by providing their email address.
Newsletter subscriptions use a confirmation process. An email address is not added to the active mailing list until the subscriber explicitly confirms the subscription.
Newsletter processing is based on consent, which may be withdrawn at any time using the unsubscribe mechanism provided in each newsletter.
Newsletter messages may contain tracking technologies that allow Chronicle 19 to determine whether a message has been opened and whether links within it have been clicked. This information is used to understand newsletter engagement and improve our communications.
When a person unsubscribes, their email address is retained on a suppression list solely to prevent the address from being subscribed again inadvertently.
3. Cookies, analytics and advertising
Chronicle 19 uses cookies and similar technologies that are necessary for the operation and security of the website.
We also use analytics services to understand how visitors use the website and advertising services to support Chronicle 19 through advertising. These services may use cookies or similar technologies for purposes including audience measurement, advertising measurement, fraud prevention and, where permitted, advertising personalisation.
Where consent is required, optional analytics and advertising processing is only activated according to the choices you make through our consent mechanism. You can accept or reject optional processing and change your choice later.
Where applicable, visitors may also be provided with additional privacy controls required under the laws that apply to them, including mechanisms to opt out of certain forms of advertising-related processing.
Third-party services used within articles or for particular website functions may also use cookies or similar technologies. Their processing is described in the relevant sections of this Privacy Policy.

- third-party content embedded in articles.
We provide these services only with the information reasonably necessary for the relevant purpose.
These providers process information according to their own privacy policies and, where applicable, contractual data-processing arrangements.
Some providers may process personal data outside the European Economic Area. Where this occurs, Chronicle 19 relies on an applicable lawful transfer mechanism under data-protection law.
5. Embedded content
Articles may contain embedded content from third-party services, including video, social-media, audio and map services.
Such content forms part of the editorial material published by Chronicle 19 and may load when the article is viewed. When embedded content is loaded, the relevant provider may receive technical information such as your IP address, browser information or the URL of the page containing the embedded content.
Those providers process information according to their own privacy policies.
6. Affiliate links
Chronicle 19 may use affiliate links. If you follow an affiliate link, the third-party service may use cookies or similar technologies to attribute the visit or resulting transaction and may process information according to its own privacy policy.

Newsletter subscriber information is retained while the subscription remains active. Unsubscribed addresses are retained on the suppression list to prevent unwanted re-subscription.
Website backups are retained on a rolling basis. Backups may therefore retain information for a limited period after information has been removed from the live website.

- request access to your personal data;
- request correction of inaccurate or incomplete data;
- request deletion of your personal data;
- request restriction of processing;

These rights are subject to the conditions and exceptions established by applicable law.
To exercise your rights, contact privacy@chronicle19.com.
We may need to request sufficient information to verify your identity before fulfilling a request.
You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority if you believe that the processing of your personal data infringes applicable data-protection law.
9. Data security
Chronicle 19 uses reasonable technical and organisational measures designed to protect personal data against unauthorised access, loss, alteration or disclosure.
The website uses HTTPS. Security measures include access controls, spam and abuse prevention, automated security checks and other measures designed to protect the website and its users.
Website backups are stored separately from the live website.
10. Personal data breaches
If a personal-data breach occurs, Chronicle 19 will assess the incident and take the measures required by applicable data-protection law.
Where legally required, Chronicle 19 will notify the competent supervisory authority within the applicable statutory period and will notify affected individuals where the law requires such notification.
11. Automated decision-making
Chronicle 19 does not use personal data to make automated decisions that produce legal effects or similarly significant effects on individuals.
Automated systems may be used for security, spam prevention, abuse detection and content moderation. These systems help protect the website and enforce our community standards, but are not used to make decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects on individuals.
12. Changes to this Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy may be updated when Chronicle 19 introduces new services, changes how personal data is processed, or when necessary to reflect changes in applicable law.
