When news broke that Dolly Parton had died, the first reaction for many was one of sadness and loss.
The world had lost one of its most beloved artists a songwriter, performer, actress and cultural icon whose influence extended far beyond country music.
But alongside the tributes to Dolly, another name kept appearing in reactions online: Miley Cyrus.
For many people, the connection was immediate. Dolly was not simply Miley’s godmother. She had been part of her life for decades, becoming a mentor, collaborator and deeply loved family figure.
That relationship was also one that millions of fans had watched over the years. Dolly appeared as “Aunt Dolly” on Hannah Montana, performed alongside Miley and frequently spoke about the special bond they shared.
So as people mourned Dolly, many also found themselves thinking about Miley and what her loss must mean to her.
The answer came from Miley herself.
“My Aunt Dolly”
Following Dolly’s death at the age of 80, Miley shared a deeply personal tribute on social media.
She began with a sentence that immediately conveyed the depth of her grief:
“The feeling of losing my Aunt Dolly is beyond what feels right to share.”
Miley went on to explain that some of the most sacred moments she shared with Dolly were private and would remain that way away from the stage, the glamour and the public eye.
Rather than trying to sum up Dolly’s extraordinary career, Miley focused on the person she knew away from the spotlight.
She also recalled one of the ideas that seemed to capture Dolly’s influence on her most clearly: Miley said she knew Dolly would want her to feel the loss, write a song about it and then continue forward with strength.
It is a particularly fitting thought given the role music played in both of their lives.
Miley ended her tribute by describing Dolly as an angel who had always been by her side, saying that she would always love her and want to make her proud.
A relationship bigger than the spotlight
For an entire generation, Dolly and Miley became connected figures.
Dolly represented an earlier generation of music, while Miley grew up to become a major artist in her own right. Their relationship crossed those generational lines, both professionally and personally.
Dolly’s appearances on Hannah Montana helped make their connection familiar to millions, but their bond extended far beyond the Disney series.
That may be why Miley’s name appeared so often in reactions to Dolly’s death.
People were not simply thinking about a celebrity who had lost her godmother. They were thinking about Miley losing Dolly.
And Miley’s tribute offered a glimpse of just how profound that loss is.
Dolly Parton leaves behind an extraordinary musical legacy and generations of fans who will continue to celebrate her work. But for Miley Cyrus, the loss is something much more intimate: the loss of someone who had been part of her life for as long as she could remember.
And perhaps that is why, alongside the world’s mourning for Dolly, many people found themselves thinking about Miley too.
