REPORTING LGBTQ+ STORIES. CHANGING THE NARRATIVE.

Red, White & Royal Wedding Gets R Rating for Sexual Content and Nudity

Red, White & Royal Wedding has received an R rating for sexual content, nudity and language. The LGBTQ+ romance sequel reunites Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez, raising questions about how intimate Alex and Henry’s next chapter will be.

Alex and Prince Henry are preparing for another royal celebration, and their return may be just as intimate as fans are hoping. Red, White & Royal Wedding, the highly anticipated sequel to the hit LGBTQ+ romance Red, White & Royal Blue, has officially received an R rating in the United States for sexual content, nudity and language. But does the new classification mean audiences can expect a bolder romance between Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez?

A royal romance with an R rating

The Motion Picture Association (MPA) has officially classified Red, White & Royal Wedding as R-rated, citing sexual content, nudity and language.

The classification, published in October 2026, has attracted attention among fans eagerly awaiting the next chapter in Alex Claremont-Diaz and Prince Henry’s relationship.

There is, however, an important distinction between the two films.

The original Red, White & Royal Blue, released in 2023, also received an R rating, but its description specifically mentioned some sexual content and partial nudity.

For the sequel, the MPA has removed those qualifiers, describing the content more broadly.

That change has encouraged speculation that the new film could feature more explicit intimate scenes, although the classification alone does not establish how much nudity or sexual activity will actually appear on screen.

One thing is certain: the sequel will retain the mature romantic tone that helped make the original a favourite among LGBTQ+ audiences.

Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez return

Nicholas Galitzine will reprise his role as Prince Henry, alongside Taylor Zakhar Perez as Alex Claremont-Diaz, the son of the American president.

Their chemistry was one of the central reasons for the success of the first film, which followed a political rivalry transformed into a secret transatlantic romance.

Based on Casey McQuiston’s bestselling novel, Red, White & Royal Blue became a major talking point following its Prime Video release, particularly for its portrayal of a high-profile same-sex relationship.

The sequel brings the couple back into the spotlight, although the full storyline remains under wraps.

Despite the title Red, White & Royal Wedding, the central wedding is reportedly not Alex and Henry’s. Instead, the story is expected to revolve around the marriage of Henry’s younger sister, Princess Beatrice.

That does not necessarily mean the couple’s own relationship will remain unchanged.

For fans, one of the biggest questions is how Alex and Henry will navigate their lives now that their romance is no longer a secret.

Familiar faces and new additions

The sequel brings back several performers from the original film.

Uma Thurman returns as US President Ellen Claremont, while Sarah Shahi, Rachel Hilson, Ellie Bamber, Clifton Collins Jr., Stephen Fry, Thomas Flynn, Aneesh Sheth and Malcolm Atobrah are also returning.

The cast is expanding with several new additions, including Lena Headey, Chloe Fineman, Henry Ashton and Alex Høgh Andersen.

Behind the camera, Jamie Babbit takes over directing duties from Matthew López, who directed the first film.

Babbit is particularly well known among LGBTQ+ cinema audiences for directing the 1999 cult classic But I’m a Cheerleader, starring Natasha Lyonne and Clea DuVall.

Her involvement brings an interesting creative connection between two generations of queer romantic storytelling.

The screenplay was written by Gemma Burgess, Matthew López and Casey McQuiston, ensuring that the author responsible for Alex and Henry’s original story remains directly involved in its continuation.

Why Red, White & Royal Blue became a queer favourite

When the original film premiered in August 2023, it arrived with an established international fanbase thanks to McQuiston’s novel.

But its popularity extended beyond readers of the book.

The film presented a romantic comedy centred on two men whose relationship carried personal, political and public consequences, combining the familiar conventions of mainstream romance with a distinctly queer perspective.

Rather than focusing exclusively on trauma or discrimination, the story gave audiences a fantasy built around love, desire, humour and the possibility of a happy ending.

That approach helped the film connect with viewers who wanted more LGBTQ+ love stories told with the scale and romantic optimism traditionally reserved for heterosexual couples.

Its success also demonstrated the international appeal of queer romantic films distributed through major streaming platforms.

The continuation of Alex and Henry’s story offers an opportunity to explore what happens after the seemingly perfect ending, when the realities of public life, family expectations and long-term commitment become impossible to ignore.

When will Red, White & Royal Wedding be released?

Filming began in January 2026 and was reported to have wrapped in March.

Despite the new MPA classification, Amazon MGM Studios has yet to announce an official release date.

No full trailer has been released either, leaving audiences waiting for their first substantial look at the sequel.

For now, the R rating provides a small but intriguing clue about what is coming.

Whether Red, White & Royal Wedding will be more explicit than its predecessor remains to be seen, but the return of Alex and Henry is already one of the most anticipated events in LGBTQ+ romantic cinema.

And if the new classification has achieved anything, it is giving fans one more reason to speculate about what happens behind palace doors.
