Seventeen years after Jennifer’s Body first hit cinemas, the cult horror film is preparing for a comeback. Screenwriter Diablo Cody has revealed that a sequel is moving forward, promising a deeper exploration of the loneliness and vulnerability behind Jennifer Check, the unforgettable man-eating character played by Megan Fox. But while the project is gaining momentum, questions remain about when audiences will see Jennifer return to the big screen.
Jennifer Check is not finished yet
During an appearance on the Petticoat Revolution podcast, released on October 14, Cody offered one of her clearest updates yet on the long-awaited sequel to the 2009 horror comedy.
“We’re doing a sequel of this movie, like imminently,” she said, suggesting that the project is closer to becoming a reality than ever before.
However, the writer was careful not to reveal specific production details. What she did discuss was her desire to explore the emotional complexity of Jennifer Check, a character whose monstrous behaviour has often overshadowed the tragedy of her transformation.
Cody described Jennifer as isolated, insecure and deeply lonely, arguing that audiences sometimes overlook her vulnerability in favour of her most memorable moments of confidence and violence.
For the sequel, she wants to explore more of the experiences that shaped Jennifer and made her such a complicated character.
From box-office disappointment to queer cult classic
When Jennifer’s Body arrived in cinemas in 2009, it struggled to find its audience.
Directed by Karyn Kusama and written by Cody, the film starred Megan Fox as Jennifer Check, a popular high-school cheerleader who becomes a flesh-eating demon after a disastrous satanic ritual.
Amanda Seyfried played Anita “Needy” Lesnicki, Jennifer’s childhood best friend, whose complicated relationship with her becomes the emotional centre of the story.
Although initially promoted heavily around Fox’s sex appeal, the film had much more to say about female friendship, exploitation, violence and the way young women are perceived.
Over time, Jennifer’s Body underwent a remarkable cultural reassessment.
Its mixture of dark humour, bisexual subtext, feminist themes and horror helped transform it into a cult favourite, particularly among LGBTQ+ audiences.
The relationship between Jennifer and Needy, including their now-famous kiss, became one of the film’s most discussed elements, inspiring years of queer interpretations and renewed appreciation.
Will Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried return?
One of the biggest questions surrounding the sequel is whether its original stars will reprise their roles.
Neither Megan Fox nor Amanda Seyfried has been officially confirmed for the new film.
However, the possibility of bringing the characters back has been part of the conversation for some time.
Cody has previously suggested that a sequel could explore Jennifer and Needy as adults, while Seyfried has publicly expressed enthusiasm about returning to the world of Jennifer’s Body.
Karyn Kusama, who directed the original film, also confirmed earlier in 2026 that work was underway on a follow-up, describing the proposed project as a reinvention of the original concept.
For fans, the prospect of reuniting Fox, Seyfried, Cody and Kusama would make the sequel particularly significant.
A second life for Jennifer’s Body
The cultural journey of Jennifer’s Body is almost as unusual as the film itself.
What was once dismissed by some critics and audiences has become an example of a movie finding its identity years after its original release.
Its renewed popularity has also changed the way Cody looks at the story.
Rather than treating Jennifer simply as a supernatural predator, the sequel promises to examine the emotional damage beneath her transformation and the contradictions that made her such a memorable character.
That approach could give the new film a different perspective while preserving the dark humour and provocative themes that helped establish its cult following.
For now, Jennifer’s Body 2 remains in development. No official release date, filming schedule or final cast has been announced.
But after seventeen years, Jennifer Check’s story appears far from over.
